In 1912, cars were primarily powered by gasoline and were still a relatively new mode of transportation. They had no electronic features and were mostly manually operated. The popular models of the time were the Ford Model T, the REO, the Studebaker, and the Buick. Cars had started to become more affordable, with the Ford Model T being priced at $680, making car ownership more attainable for the middle class. Cars in 1912 had an average top speed of around 40 mph, with some models reaching up to 60 mph. The Model T had a fuel efficiency of around 15-20 mpg and had a horsepower of 20 hp. Safety features such as seatbelts and airbags did not exist yet, so driving was a risky endeavor, and accidents were common. However, cars were quickly catching on and would soon become a ubiquitous presence on roads around the world.
